REVERSE HAIKU TIME

BANANA REPUBLIC SOCKS

PINK TWEED WEARIN LOOSE

AZALEA FOOT SOLDIERS

“The Flower Called Nowhere” by Stereolab is playing on repeat. Sometimes to come back to center i’ll write a haiku about what’s in front of me. Right now it’s just my propped up feet, my dogs, the sunkas if you will for my Lakota readers. Speaking of which I just had a thick ol’ kiki with my auntie Jodi Archambault at the Denver airport over some Tocabe breakfast fare. Sometimes when we’re both within 300 miles of Colorado we’ll link up @ the airport to meet for brekky. Won’t even fly, just check suitcases full of oyster crackers & vibe out. She got the buffalo sausage burrito & I got the buffalo sausage bowl because one was pre-made & one was built to my liking — never ever trust a pre-roll.

Jodi told me about how we got our hunka ceremonies (adoption) from the Arikara tribe in exchange for the return of one of their sacred items. She went onto explain what “landback” actually is because idk about y’all.. some of these lofty ideological frameworks like “collective liberation” & “rematriation” & “vegan yogurt” lose their exact meanings along the way to verbal // literary ubiquity & application. I appreciated her breakdown of that concept.

I have band rehearsal coming up here in the next 30 minutes which I’m going to bike to, I’m hyped for that. So much performance these past few days, a necessary medium of expression for me. Okay imma pee & poop then head that way, i’ll return with more..

Alright I’m back, several hours later, laying in my mom’s guest room off of some NyQuil because I’m gravely deprived of sleep. I just need to completely shut down, the writing helps too as it tires my mind. I used to abuse cough medicine, that was a darker chapter in my life. I just wanted to sleep through the sadness. My words might soon become more incoherent than usual & if that’s the case then I pledge to keep this entry largely unedited so we can all scrutinize my spiraling cognition.

Ok so The bike ride was EVEN peachier than predicted. I took some alternate routes & stopped by where I’m performing on Saturday, all the while listening to the new Steve Lacy song. There were some natives just laying around the stage, catching a vibe. I said what’s up. A lot of natives hang around downtown, congregating about several street corners. Sometimes they sing, sometimes they ask for money, other times they’re just occupying. Same. One man’s loiter is another man’s LANDBACK. ok i gott tap out kjjj

11 hrs of sleep has my brain going BROLICAAAA!! Brolic. Brolicollini. Consider my cognitive calamity hushed. It’s 8:30am, I’m at a cafe drinking that wakalapi, mind clotted with a lot to bleed.

Alright so yes band rehearsal was ill. It’s lovely to hear my music reinterpreted in a live, analog context. SOUTH DAKOTA RAISED goes crazy. I’m gonna list off the bandmates real quick to sing their praises. First we have Jacob Lemme on guitar who’s been my creative collaborator since the Obama administration. He’s who you’ll hear throughout my entire discography, namely on Part-Time Indian.

Then we have Jackson on drums, he’s in a band with Lemme so they have palpable sexual & musical chemistry. He also has a formidable mustache that I rock vicariously since I had to shave my recent lip pillar. Then there’s Jeff on keys, a wizard of the ivories who’s played with me live before. He once taught my music in his curriculum & apparently almost got let the fuck go because a student cunting complained that I assing cuss too shitting much in my tit stain dick fartful music can you believe that??

Up next there’s Dalton on bass who I don’t know very well but also educates the youth & has facial hair. He’s sweet & also shreds. Furthermore we have Soleil whose voice turns heads & heals hearts mannnn he’s just got that MMMHMMM i’m enjoying our harmonies. Then there’s our eventual mates Stacie & Marlena who haven’t been to rehearsal because of scheduling conflicts. Stacie is also on vocals (&& also an educator wow) & Marlena on saxophone.. Marlena is special because of several reasons, two being that we’ve performed together at U of Michigan U that she’s from Duluth, MN where we’ve also performed. Maybe y’all are like this too, but in order to be my friend, there needs to be an implicit level of downness within.

I’m quick to create & everyone around me knows that whatever we do will be fun & they’ll get paid, they just might not understand what we’re exactly doing. I’m honored to do these diddles with them. Quick shoutout to Wes for letting us rent the studio for rehearsal too ! I interned with him years ago & it’s special to be back.

I just looked back at my last post in April. Omg that Albuquerque show sucked so deep. Upside was that I went to go see Primus & co. for the first time with Josh & Levay that weekend. I’m not gonna recap everything since then until now.. instead here’s a limerick about it:

We tubed down the river with naughtiness

I sucked on some toes for an audience

I stay out the way

But not in Santa Fe

Where Adrian got me my gaudy wrist

Are you caught up? Great. So yes I’m playing a festival here in Sioux Falls, my hometown. Beforehand I’ll be doing some local press & writing workshops for local youth throughout the state, namely here & in Brookings at South Dakota State University. I’m excited to perform on the regional news station called KELOLAND. In the band group chat kelo land autocorrected to “kelp land” so now that’s our band name haha. After the show I’m gonna try to head out to pine ridge to see some family because I missed some ceremonies this summer due to work. I feel disconnected without my seasonal dosage of the rez so I’m eager to return. There’s so much about that land & my people that signify the feeling of being home.. one of which is probably the bulbous prairie sky, whose ever-changing mood puts a trot in our stomps and a laugh down our spines.

Following a short respite, I’ll be in Seattle for another festival then nyc for fashion week & the premiere of The Lowdown, a new TV series that I’m doing some stuff in. Hopefully while in the city I’ll also be directing a commercial for something neat, but we’ll see about that one chief. The name of the game is adaptability. Life has gotten a lot more meaningful upon internalizing how to be quick on my feet & accepting the loss of control. It’s not what you do, it’s what you endure, a mantra that I’ve learned from champion fighter // YouTuber Payton Talbott.

I’m gonna conclude this diary entry I want to go outside & run around before I submit for an audition. Before doing so let’s discuss (we’re not discussing anything i’m writing & you’re reading that’s not a discussion ok whatever) some of Frank Lloyd Wright’s tenets of building & how they apply to everything. I’ve recently visited a few of his buildings so these are fresh on my frame. Do this on your own sheet of paper too:

RESPECT & INTEGRATE WITH THE SIGHT - This week I’m writing // being interviewed by local folks, sharing my creativity.

USE NATURAL MATERIALS IN AN HONEST WAY - I’m gonna get nerdy here but i recently made this uptempo song & didn’t quantize (making the beat exactly on time) so that my natural rhythm shapes its groove. The way I dance & move is how the song will. This isn’t the first time I’ve done this but it’s great to be back out of time.

SUPPORT THE GOALS & IDEAS OF THE COMMUNITY - A bit lofty, but I’ve been researching the down horrendous-ness of men & young boys & what I can do to help recognize that & create solutions. Doing so parallels all of the goals & ideas of my community which are essentially just equity to & empowerment of nature & the universe. It’s all for y’all please know that.
